Volunteering at Children's Hospital

Volunteers at Children's Hospital are part of a family. Volunteers will find that staff, patients and their families depend on them. They will experience personal rewards, which are immeasurable, and what they give to the hospital and its patients is also immeasurable.

Volunteers can help in the following ways:

  • Entertain and assist patients - The hospital can be a scary place. Volunteers can be very reassuring to young patients and their families.
  • Work in an office setting - Not all volunteers want to interact with patients. Many choose to help with office work such as filing, answering phones, making copies and other general office duties.
  • Staff the Gift Shop - The hospital's Gift Shop is staffed by volunteers and is a great place to have contact with patients and their families, visitors and hospital staff.
Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age or in the 9th grade (the summer before 9th grade is acceptable). High school students must bring a letter of recommendation from a teacher or school staff member. Those 18 years of age and older will be asked to sign a consent form so that a criminal and sex offender background check may be done. Before beginning their service, volunteers will need to have a tuberculosis skin test done. During flu season, volunteers must either receive the flu vaccine or wear a mask when in the hospital where patients might be. The tuberculosis skin test and the flu vaccine can be performed at Children's Hospital at no cost to the volunteer. Those who have had a TB test done within the past year or a flu vaccine done that season may bring a copy to us before they begin. All volunteers must attend an orientation, then schedule an interview prior to starting.

The Fall and Spring Program

The fall session runs from mid-August through December and the Spring session runs from early January through May. Orientations will be scheduled first with interviews scheduled after attendance at orientation. Upcoming orientations are Saturday, November 22 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Auditorium, Tuesday, December 2 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Auditorium, Saturday, December 13 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in Boardroom B and Thursday, December 18 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Boardroom B. Please call the office at (504) 896-9486 or email Nancy Willis at nwillis@chnola.org to schedule your orientation.

Summer Volunteer Program

The summer program begins in early June and runs until early August. Children's Hospital is fortunate to have the assistance of many volunteers over the summer, but these positions fill up quickly!

COLLEGE STUDENTS AND ADULTS

Scheduling for orientations for the summer program begins in early March with interviews scheduled after attendance at an orientation.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

To apply for the summer program, high school students should print the Volunteer Application and send it along with their letter of recommendation, to:
Children's Hospital
Volunteer Services
200 Henry Clay Ave
New Orleans, LA 70118

The deadline for a high school student to submit a volunteer application for the summer is March 15.
The first summer a high school student volunteers at the hospital, they will be placed in a non-patient environment (doing clerical or office work). If they return, either during the school year or the following summer, they may have the opportunity to be placed in areas with patient contact. It is not until the volunteer fulfills his/her summer commitment that a letter will be written or school form signed.

Basic Questions and Answers

Do I need special skills to be a volunteer?
No, all you really need is a desire to help others and a willingness to learn.

Do volunteers have to work a minimum number of hours?
Yes, Children's Hospital requires volunteers to commit to a minimum of 50 volunteer hours, which can be done throughout the year. Volunteers can work as little as 3 hours a week. No letters of recommendation or confirmation of hours will be given until this commitment has been met.
