THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AT
CHILDRENS HOSPITAL IN NEW ORLEANS
The hospital's Jack M. Weiss Emergency Care Center is staffed 24 hours a day by board-certified pediatricians, with the availability of a full range of pediatric specialists. The Emergency Department has a total of 27 exam rooms and is supported by a nursing staff specially trained to handle pediatric emergencies. All of our pediatric emergency department physicians are PALS and ATLS certified.
The 27-bed unit provided care to 56,900 patients in 2012 and is one of the busiest emergency departments in the state. Professional expertise includes, but is not limited to:
Medical and surgical problems
Minor and some major trauma
Child Sexual Abuse/Forensic Exam
The primary focus of the Emergency Department is to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the emergency patient and his/her family in the emergency setting. Services include, but are not limited to, assessment, the ordering of diagnostic testing, sedation, IV therapy, medication administration, respiratory treatments, and patient/family education.
Although the majority of patients are pediatric (age newborn to 21), staff is trained and prepared to care for patients of any age on an emergency basis. Patients older than 21 and pregnant patients are stabilized and transferred to an adult facility if warranted.
