Skin Treatments for Children & Adolescents

The dermatologists at Children’s Hospital New Orleans provide outpatient evaluation and consultation on all conditions involving the skin, hair, and nails. Diagnosis and treatment are available for both acute and chronic conditions. We offer diagnostic procedures including skin biopsies, skin scrapings for microscopy, and testing for bacterial, fungal, and viral infection. Our surgical services include outpatient day surgery, electrosurgery, cryosurgery, and laser therapy. In addition to treating common childhood skin conditions, we specialize in treating conditions unique to children including genetic and congenital skin diseases. The dermatology service provides inpatient consultation for dermatologic needs while patients are hospitalized.

Highlights of our program

Kid-friendly dermatologists - The rapid growth that children undergo during the transformation from infancy to adulthood involves changes in our skin. Knowing the difference between what is typical and what is abnormal may sometimes be challenging. Our pediatric dermatologists are here to guide you in providing the healthiest way to care for and treat your child’s skin. Moles, pigment changes, intermittent rashes, and other skin growths or blemishes are likely to appear as children grow and develop. We focus on caring exclusively for children and adolescents so that you and your child can have an experience that is both comfortable and informative.

Narrowband UVB Phototherapy - Phototherapy with narrowband UVB light is the most common form of phototherapy used to safely treat a variety of chronic skin conditions. The therapy typically consists of treatments occurring 2-3 times per week for several months, and sometimes longer depending on the condition and patient’s response. It is an effective, safe, and painless option for widespread skin disease.

Multidisciplinary teams - The pediatric dermatology team collaborates with other Children’s Hospital New Orleans pediatric specialists for multidisciplinary clinics including the Vascular Anomalies Clinic and the Skin and Joint Clinic. In addition, our providers work closely with other pediatric specialists including hematologists and oncologists, infectious diseases specialists, plastic surgeons, and more.
