The Children’s Hospital New Orleans Imaging Center at the main campus offers specialized pediatric imaging and radiology services in an innovative and kid-friendly environment that amplifies the patient experience. Many of our services are also available at our satellite locations throughout the region.
The new 17,500 square foot Imaging Center, opened in April 2020, includes two state-of-the-art GE Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners, one 3 Tesla and one 1.5 Tesla, with the strength of the magnet and corresponding image resolution being the difference between the two. Both MRIs are part of an Adventure Series developed in partnership with GE that features custom travel-related themes, taking kids around the world and on outer space adventures as they undergo imaging tests. Children’s Hospital has also added a new Positron Emission Tomography – Computed Tomography (PET/CT) to better serve patients on campus. The PET/CT takes kids on a pirate adventure, intended to remove some of the fear and anxiety that can come with the imaging process.
The new Imaging Center features four X-Ray/Fluoroscopy rooms that connect to a spacious and bright radiology technologist workspace, creating an optimal work environment. Each room also includes an adjoining dressing room, improving privacy and the overall experience for patients and families. The two spacious ultrasound rooms in the new center were also designed with experience in mind, featuring private bathrooms and a spacious and soothing environment.
Radiography (X-ray) – The oldest form of medical imaging, our team uses state of the art equipment to obtain the highest quality images while delivering the lowest and safest radiation dose possible.
Fluoroscopy – A continuous series of X-ray images are used for specific areas of the body including the bones, muscles, joints, and solid organs. Upper GI, lower GI, and cystogram procedures also utilize fluoroscopy.
EOS Imaging – An imaging technology that uses a low dose of radiation to deliver safe, high-quality x-ray images for clinical decision making. The EOS imaging is ideal for the management of skeletal deformities such as scoliosis and lower limb deformities by providing 3D visualization and measurement tools.
Ultrasound – A method of obtaining images of internal organs by sending high-frequency sound waves into the body. The reflected soundwaves’ echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time, visual image.
Computed Tomography (CT) and Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) – With the use of the GE TrueFidelity CT Imaging System, the highest quality images can be obtained while delivering the patient the lowest dose of radiation possible. Two- and three-dimensional reconstructions, cardiac imaging, and cone beam CT imaging are also offered. CTA uses a CT scanner with an injection into the blood vessels to help diagnose blood vessel abnormalities.
PET/CT – Positron Emission Technology (PET Scan) images are combined with those from a computed tomography scan (CT scan) in one machine that creates 3D images of a specific area of the body. These images are used to help diagnose infections and tumors and allow for early and highly accurate detection of disease.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) – Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to generate images of the internal organs and tissues in the body. Our MRI services are used in cardiac, fetal, advanced neurological, musculoskeletal, and functional assessments. MRA uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer to evaluate blood vessels and to help to identify vascular abnormalities.
Nuclear Medicine – Also referred to as nuclear radiology, this modality uses small amounts of radioactive materials to diagnose or treat disease while examining organ function and structure.
Interventional Radiology – A subspecialty of radiology, Interventional Radiologists diagnose and treat a vast array of conditions by performing minimally invasive procedures visually guided by x-rays, computed tomography (CT), fluoroscopy, or ultrasound.

Insurance Authorizations: All non-CHNOLA provider offices ordering imaging should obtain an authorization for the scheduled procedures and send it with the order or once the authorization is obtained.
Sharing images
The Children’s Hospital New Orleans Imaging Center uses PowerShare,
a cloud-based platform that allows for the secure exchange of images from
outside locations without the need to copy images on a CD or DVD.
