The Children’s Hospital New Orleans Burn Team specializes in the evaluation and care of burns in the pediatric population. Our multidisciplinary team collaborates to assess the needs of patients and families and provides exceptional, evidence-based burn care. Burn injuries can be difficult to evaluate and treat but our team is here to help. Members of the Burn Care team include a pediatric surgeon, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and a physical medicine and rehabilitation provider. In addition, members from the chaplain services, child life, nutrition, physical and occupational therapy, social services, psychology, and speech pathology departments are involved in the care of these patients.

Conditions treated include, but are not limited to:

• Chemical burn
• Electrical burn including lightning
• Flame/thermal burn
• Inhalational burn
• Necrotizing soft tissue infections
• Scald burn
• Stevens-Johnson syndrome
• Toxic epidermal necrolysis
• Traumatic injuries/amputation

Transfers for Inpatient Care

Burns can be one of the most difficult injuries to care for, and often, more serious burn injuries require inpatient treatment from a specialized pediatric burn care provider. Children’s Hospital is here to help determine the most appropriate care for patients with burn injuries. It is important to remember that patients with burns that are greater than 30% total body surface area should be stabilized and transferred directly to a verified pediatric burn center as soon as possible.

Referring facilities and providers wishing to send pictures of a burn as part of a referral or consult should follow these simple steps:

1. Take photos of the burn.

2. Securely email photos to CHburn@LCMChealth.org and include the patient's first initial and last name.

3. Call the Transfer Center to discuss the patient 855.246.6521 or 504.896.6673.

The Children’s Hospital Burn Team provides personalized, outpatient care for children and young adults. The team offers the latest in wound care, pain management, grafting procedures, and reconstructive surgery as needed.
