Our team of specialists at the Children’s Hospital Vascular Anomalies Clinic (VAC) provide diagnostic and therapeutic care for all types of vascular anomalies. Our multidisciplinary, team-based approach allows patients to be evaluated by multiple specialists in a single visit to enable development of a comprehensive treatment plan. We focus on family centered care and provide counselling, management, monitoring, and interventions according to the specific needs of each patient.
Vascular anomalies are typically classified into two groups, vascular tumors and vascular malformations. They are composed of vessels which may include arteries, capillaries, lymphatic vessels, veins, or a combination of these. As advancements are made in the understanding of the genetic causes of specific vascular anomalies, targeted therapies are on the rise for these rare disorders.
Prior to the initial visit to the Vascular Anomalies Clinic, it is important that we receive the patient’s medical records including any previous testing or imaging. The clinic coordinators will schedule an appointment with the patients and will confirm that all records have been received. They may also request photographs, if needed, for pre-clinic planning. Prior to the clinic visit, the team of providers will discuss the child’s case and order any additional testing that is recommended prior to evaluation.
On the day of the visit, each specialist that will be involved in your direct care will evaluate the child so this process may take several hours. After all visits have concluded, the multidisciplinary team will collaboratively discuss each patient and will develop a treatment plan that is most appropriate for the patient.
